Press Release: Downtown Divas Go Red for Women’s Heart Health Month

On Thursday, January 28th at 5 p.m. at the Old Armory Steakhouse, the Downtown Camden Guild (DCG) will kick off “Women’s Heart Health Month” with the First Annual Downtown Divas Go Red for Women’s Heart Health to build heart health awareness amongst women, raise money for the American Heart Association (AHA), provide a time for women to socialize, and highlight downtown businesses.
The women of Camden and Kershaw County are reminded to wear red in support of heart health awareness.

Live entertainment and refreshments will be at the Old Armory Steakhouse at 514 Rutledge Street, the starting point for the evening. Ladies will have the opportunity to explore several downtown businesses with the chance to win a number of gifts and prizes from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

KershawHealth will be providing blood pressure checks, body mass index testing, diabetes/heart disease education and demonstrations of our fitness classes at Vincent Sheheen’s campaign headquarters on Broad Street throughout the night. The night will culminate from 7 p.m. to 8 p. m. with guest speaker Heather Hoopes Matthews, prizes, and more.

Event t-shirts and tote bags will be available for sale at locations throughout downtown for $15, benefiting the AHA and DCG. Also, Diva Hearts will be available at local businesses for a $1 donation benefiting the AHA throughout the months of January and February.

Parking downtown has been reserved for the event and the Camden Police Department will be on patrol to ensure a safe and secure evening for all.

Call for Executive Committee Nominations

Happy New Year to everyone!

I wanted to send out a brief announcement for the call for nominations of officers to the 2010 - 2011 Executive Committee for the Downtown Camden Guild.

Nominations will be accepted thru Friday, January 29th, 2010.

Elections will follow at the February 16th At-Large Membership meeting.

New officers will take their posts effective March 2nd, 2010.

In attendance: 13 members in attendance along with Edwin, Edward, Jamie, Wade and special guest Liz Horton

Meeting was called to order by interim President Edwin Kohn.

Edwin started the meeting with the “President’s Message” he started with a re-cap of the events that has taken place since the guild has started: Halloween was 2-3,000 in attendance; Christmas Tree Lighting about 150-200 in attendance; budget requests need to be made to Wade by February.

2. Jamie talked about the Downtown Divas Go Red event that will take place on January 29, 2010 from 5-7. KershawHealth will be participating, t-shirts and tote bags will be available and we will be distributing hearts for sale for $1.00. Proceeds will go AHA.

3. Edwin discussed the vendor permit, at the present, the permit is with the City Police, after the police’s approval, it will go back to Council for approval.
We will be working on the by-laws and hope to have them ready for approval in February.

4. Wade discussed the new mission statement:
Our Mission:
A commerce association, whose mission is to represent local business interests and maintain a sense of civic pride in the City of Camden’s historic business district.

Wade continued to discuss our goals as well, he brought to our attention that we have already started to accomplish our goals. For example, the vendor permit, grant money that is available. We have a long way to go but we are definitely on the right track.

• Executive Committee- Tuesday, January 5th 2010 8:30 at First Community Bank
• Programming Committee- Wednesday, January 13th at noon Old Armory
• At Large Meeting- Tuesday, January 19th 8:30 at 1011 Galleria
• Policy Committee- Wednesday, January 27th at noon working lunch TBA



6. Next Meeting Schedule: Wade will be printing up a yearly calendar of events

7. New Business:
Kidz Café is now open. It is a café just for children. It will offer mentoring and tutoring as well as a safe location

8. Liz Horton, of the Chamber, spoke to the group about the advantages of being a member of the chamber. For more information you can log on to the Chambers website or stop by the Chamber and pick up a brochure and application. The phone number is (803) 432-2525.
We will be hosting the State Championship Bass Pro Shop Fishing Tournament @ Lake Wateree, more information will be available soon.
