Jockey Silk Rules

Dear Sponsors and Artists,

The Downtown Camden Guild (DCG) is proud to launch our civic art project for the 2010 Carolina Cup. We are planning to display 24”x36” aluminum sheet metal signs in the shape of jockey silks (jerseys) on the decorative light poles throughout downtown Camden in the week leading up to the Cup. There are 36 silks available for a price of $125 each. Proceeds from the sale of the silks will go to benefit the DCG.

As a sponsor we ask that you commission an artist, school group, or non-profit to paint your silk (on both sides) in the design of your choosing. Fees and cost of materials are to be negotiated between the sponsor and artist.

As guidelines, it is recommended that the artwork be tasteful in nature. Keep in mind that the City of Camden reserves the right of refusal to display any silk if it is deemed improper as in accordance with the City Art Policy. Any theme which could be considered illicit, explicit, or offensive is discouraged. Works that contain profanity, nudity, political endorsements, or corporate logos will be rejected from consideration for display. In order to prevent this from occurring you are encouraged to submit a maximum one page description of the design or a schematic sketch using the template enclosed.

Completed jockey silks need to be submitted no later than March 19th, 2010. They will be placed along DeKalb Street, Broad Street, and Rutledge Street beginning March 22nd, 2010 and displayed thru March 31st, 2010. During the Carolina Cup, a silent auction will be held for the 37 jockey silks with proceeds benefiting the South Carolina Committee of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (SCTRF).

This civic art project is a great opportunity to beautify the City of Camden in a unique way, but also to promote an event which is one of the City’s “calling cards.” It is also an avenue of creative expression for local artists, who will have the opportunity to have their work viewed by nearly 100,000 visitors. This is just one step in a long journey of showing the City of Camden’s quaint sophistication.

Please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested in getting involved in this program at the contact information located at the bottom of the page. Also enclosed is a list of local artists who have already shown an interest in participating in this project.

We are on a tight deadline, so in order to give the artists the most time to create a quality product you must act quickly. Also remember, the quantity is limited to 36 jockey silks in the 2010 edition and will be sold on a first come first serve basis. All orders should be placed no later than February 19th, 2010.

Thank you for your continued support.

Jockey Silks Info

In efforts to beautify downtown Camden and show community support for the equine industry, the Downtown Camden Guild (DCG) is promoting a civic art project featuring painted aluminum jockey silks which will hang from banner arms on decorative light posts in the downtown area.

Local artist, Dot Goodwin of the Artists’ Attic, designed the jockey silks and has been commissioned by the DCG to paint the first in a collection of 37.

The DCG is looking for sponsors for the jockey silks from local businesses, corporations, and private individuals. They are also seeking artists who wish to be commissioned to paint the silks.

Each sponsorship costs $125, proceeds of which go to the DCG. The jockey silks will be displayed in the week leading up to the Carolina Cup on Broad Street, Rutledge Street, and DeKalb Street.

According to DCG Interim-Vice President, Edward Hinson, “The plan is to auction off the silks during the Cup with proceeds benefiting the South Carolina Committee of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.”

“The silks can enhance the aesthetics of downtown Camden and project the artistic value of not only the designs, but also Camden’s thriving artist community,” says Hinson. “It is also a creative way to recognize the significant role the equine community and the Carolina Cup play in our local economy.”
