In efforts to beautify downtown Camden and show community support for the equine industry, the Downtown Camden Guild (DCG) is promoting a civic art project featuring painted aluminum jockey silks which will hang from banner arms on decorative light posts in the downtown area.
Local artist, Dot Goodwin of the Artists’ Attic, designed the jockey silks and has been commissioned by the DCG to paint the first in a collection of 37.
The DCG is looking for sponsors for the jockey silks from local businesses, corporations, and private individuals. They are also seeking artists who wish to be commissioned to paint the silks.
Each sponsorship costs $125, proceeds of which go to the DCG. The jockey silks will be displayed in the week leading up to the Carolina Cup on Broad Street, Rutledge Street, and DeKalb Street.
According to DCG Interim-Vice President, Edward Hinson, “The plan is to auction off the silks during the Cup with proceeds benefiting the South Carolina Committee of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.”
“The silks can enhance the aesthetics of downtown Camden and project the artistic value of not only the designs, but also Camden’s thriving artist community,” says Hinson. “It is also a creative way to recognize the significant role the equine community and the Carolina Cup play in our local economy.”
For those interested in sponsoring or painting a jockey silk please contact Wade Luther, Downtown Manager for the City of Camden, at (803) 432-2421.
